The Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law is pleased to announce its inaugural writing prizes. CIPIT aims to encourage scholarship on its primary research fields, which include a variety of non-fictional writing. The prizes are categorized into the Junior Writing Prize and the Professional Writing Prize.

Criteria for qualification
Only non-PhD holders who are nationals of or residents in Africa can submit.
Submissions may be only published or unpublished papers.
Submitted papers should be a minimum of 7,000 words (without footnotes) whose subject matter comes out of social science fields, including law, journalism, economics, political science, education, communication studies, or any interdisciplinary combination of the fields. Topics need to be around technology/ social media/ artificial intelligence or any other incidental subjects that clearly affects Africa.
Already-published papers are also eligible but should not have been published before 1st January 2020. Authors of already-published papers will need to show that they have obtained permission from their publishers to submit their papers.

Prize: 1500 USD plus publication in the Strathmore Law Review’s next volume (for papers that have not already been published).
Announcement of Prize winner will be made in January 2022.

Anyone within whichever professional level can apply, but experienced/ established professionals are likely to submit the most competitive works. Only nationals or residents of Africa can apply.
Competitive submissions will need to be focused on a topic that affects Africa.
Submissions may be published papers, unpublished papers, or books.
Submitted papers need to be focused on social science fields, including law, journalism, economics, political science, education, communication studies, or any interdisciplinary combination of the fields and should be a minimum of 11,000 words (without footnotes). Already-published papers are also eligible but should not have been published before 1st January 2020.
Books need to likewise be focused on law/ other social science field. Already-published books are also eligible but should not have been published before 1st January 2019. Authors of already-published papers and books will need to show that they have obtained permission from their publishers to submit their work.
