WHO WE ARE

Overview

The Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law (CIPIT) is a research centre based at Strathmore University. Over the years, CIPIT has positioned itself as a thought leader in the evolving fields of law, technology, and innovation across Africa. We conduct evidence-based research on issues at the intersection of law, technology, and innovation in Africa. Our work spans across key thematic areas, including Intellectual Property, Artificial Intelligence, Data Governance and Policy, Cyber Law and Policy, and Digital Identity.

Background

Since its inception, CIPIT has grown into a leading institution providing evidence-based research, policy recommendations, and capacity-building initiatives that address Africa’s evolving digital ecosystem. Initially founded to advance knowledge in Intellectual Property (IP), CIPIT has broadened its scope to respond to the intersection of law and technology.

Our current research areas cover Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Governance and Policy, Cyber Law and Policy, Digital Identity, and Intellectual Property Law. Across these domains, CIPIT produces academic and applied research, develops training programs, and engages stakeholders in dialogue to inform policy and practice. CIPIT plays a key role in shaping the frameworks that govern technology and innovation in Africa. Through research, stakeholder engagement, and training, CIPIT works to generate insights that inform policymaking and guide responsible innovation.

CIPIT sustains its operations through collaborative research projects with diverse partner organizations.

Mission

Our mission is to study, create, and share knowledge on the legal and policy dimensions of intellectual property, information technology, and emerging technologies. We focus on how these fields shape innovation, governance, human rights, and sustainable development in Africa.

Vision

Our vision is to be the leading African centre for evidence-based research and policy on law and technology, advancing approaches that prioritise human rights, local perspectives, and inclusive innovation.

Values

We are guided by excellence through ethical practice, partnerships with impact, and integrity in our work.

OUR WORK

Evidence based Research

CIPIT conducts original, evidence-based research at the intersection of law, technology, and society to inform policy, guide legal reform, and enrich academic and public debate. Our work explores how areas such as intellectual property, artificial intelligence, data governance, cybersecurity, and digital identity affect innovation, governance, and human rights. By grounding our research in African contexts, we aim to promote inclusive, rights-based digital governance that responds to the continent’s unique opportunities and challenges.

Training and Capacity building

We are committed to nurturing the next generation of African experts in digital governance, law, and policy. CIPIT designs and delivers capacity-building programs including workshops, fellowships, webinars, and mentorship initiatives that bring together students, policymakers, regulators, and practitioners. These platforms equip stakeholders with the tools to respond to evolving challenges in the digital age.

African Perspectives and Human Rights

At CIPIT, African perspectives and human rights are at the core of our approach to research, policy, and practice. We recognize that meaningful governance of technology must reflect local realities. Our work provides thought leadership on issues such as freedom of information, data protection, content regulation, and intellectual property ownership. Through close collaboration with governments, private sector actors, and civil society, we ensure that policies and laws are not only effective but also inclusive and rights-based. Beyond policy advice, we create accessible platforms for dialogue, publish open-access resources, and provide practical support.
