(54)    Title

Processing for extracting banana wool and sponge.

(57)    Abstract

The invention covers the simple dehydration process which yielded three different potential industrial raw materials: banana wool, a spongy tissue and a sisal-like byproduct. The banana-wool was obtained by stripping the banana pseudostem naked of all layers particularly the lower part of the pseudostem, reducing it to thin slices into metabisulphite 2 -3% and drying to between
50-60 degrees C. At between 10-14% me the fibrous tissue peeled from wool-like fibres which formed balls with a firmer but cotton-like texture. The fibrous tissue had very high water holding capacity as well as ability to mop up oilspills. The last loose layer of the pseudostem sheath after peeling off was stripped into thin strips which were treated with an anti-oxidant and dried
