(54) Title: A FAST DRYING DISINFECTANT

(57) Abstract: A fast drying disinfectant composition useful for disinfecting purposes, comprising

a solution of a disinfectious medicament in an alcohol and a thickening agent consisting of a water soluble, high molecular cellulose compound and a hydoxide. The steps in the formulation of the disinfectant results in a disinfectant that is readily used without overflowing or falling off from the part of the body where it is applied, or having neither occurrence of twisted scale-like residue nor unpleasant stickiness before or after drying. Wherein the said steps of formulation plays a major role in characteristics of the disinfectant.
 
A FAST DRYING DISINFECTANT

DESCRIPTION

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a fast drying disinfectant comprising of a disinfectant medicament in the form of an alcohol solution and a thickening agent consisting of a water-soluble, high molecular cellulose compound and a gelation

5    enhancer. The invention further describes the steps to be followed in order to achieve a disinfectant that is readily used without overflowing or falling from the part of the body or skin where it is applied, or having neither occurrence of twisted scale-like residue nor unpleasantstickiness before or after drying.


BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Infections may be prevented in some extents by frequent washing. Washing does not completely remove the pathogenic micro organisms and it will be necessary to use a disinfectant for ensuring the removal of micro organisms.

5    It has usually been taken to dip the part of the body to be disinfected in a basin filled with a diluted disinfectant solution in order to disinfect it. However, this means of dipping increases rather risks of cross infection because the disinfectant solution in a basin will decrease or lose the disinfectious effect due to

10    contamination by repeatedly dipping and further because the solution will be contaminated with resistant micro organisms or fallen bacteria existing in the atmosphere.

Recently, it has been proposed to use a compact vessel

15    containing an alcoholic disinfectant solution which can be used personally in every time in need. The alcoholic solution-containing vessel has various advantages, for example, it can easily be used by merely applying to the part of the skin a suitable amount of the disinfectant solution from the vessel

20    when used, and it need not to wipe up with a towel etc.

because the applied disinfectant solution is rapidly dried with the

evaporation of the alcoholic solvent, and further, it has no risk of cross infection contrary to the means using a basin

because it is not necessary to use  repeatedly the same

25    disinfectant solution.

Although this type of disinfectant with an alcoholic solution-containing vessel has recently been achieved, it has still some

defects in handling thereof due to alcoholic solution. That is, when it is used, a sufficient amount of the alcoholic solution shall

30    be taken in order to apply thoroughly to the part of the body. In this case, the solution sometimes overflows and falls onto the floor. Thus a disinfectant with a thickener is needed.

Thickeners such as carboxyvinyl polymer and water -soluble high molecular cellulose have been used before. Unfortunately when

35    the carboxyvinyl polymer is used alone, the composition has a sufficiently decreased viscosity and can well be spread, but when

applied to, the polymer component precipitates (forms resin) by the action of the salts (e.g. sodium chloride) on the part of the body, to give twisted scale-like residue. On the other hand, when

40    the water-soluble, high molecular cellulose compound is used alone, the composition shows inferior spreading property and hence can hardly be spread on the part of the body where it is applied and further shows disadvantageously high stickiness before and after drying.

45    Consequently there is need to provide a disinfectant suitable for disinfecting and capable of overcoming the above illustrated shortcomings of the previous disinfectants.


SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present invention provide a disinfectant suitable for disinfecting the skin and with increased viscosity of the alcoholic solution by gelling thereof for the purpose of eliminating the defects of overflowing or falling of the

5    solution. Thus, the invention provides an increased viscosity of the alcoholic solution with the use of a combination of a gelation enhancer and water soluble high molecular cellulose as a thickening agent and gives a gel-type disinfectant

composition which can be used without defects such as overflowing or falling and which can be well spread onto

10    the desired part of the skin by rubbing with neither occurrence of undesirable twisted scale-like residue nor unpleasant stickiness before or after drying (and hence no need of washing or wiping up with towel),


The present invention therefore provides a gel type disinfectant

15    composition having excellent physical properties and effects comprising a thickening agent consisting a combination of a hydroxide and a water-soluble, high molecular cellulose compound and a gelation enhancer to an alcoholic solution

containing an active disinfectious medicament  (antimicrobials)

20    and a wetting agent. Wherein the thickening agents is effective for gelling the alcoholic solution.

The present invention further provides a method of formulating the said disinfectant medicament wherein the steps of formulating the disinfectant medicament is responsible for the resultant disinfectant with the desired characteristics.

25    The present invention therefore have the advantages of well spreading without unpleasant stickiness before or after drying and is effective for eliminating the defect of occurrence of undesirable twisted scale-like residue.

OBJECTIVES OF THE INVENTION

An object of the present invention is to provide a fast-drying disinfectant for the skin

Another object of the present invention is to provide a disinfectant that can spread well on application.

5    A further object of this invention is to provide a disinfectant that overcome the defects of overflowing and falling off.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a

disinfectant that overcome the occurrence of undesirable twisted

10    scale-like residue nor unpleasant stickiness before or after drying.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERED EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION

The detailed description of the preferred embodiment of the present invention provides herein below a method and substance for fast drying disinfectant medicament composition for the skin.

5    In an embodiment of the present invention, wherein the said substance of disinfectant medicament comprises: an active disinfectious medicament (antimicrobials), an alcohol, a wetting agent and a water-soluble high molecular cellulose compound and a gelation enhancer as the thickening agent.

10    In an embodiment of the present invention, wherein the said substance further comprises of a wetting agent.

In a further embodiment of the present invention, wherein the

wetting agent is incorporated into the disinfectant composition in order to prevent any possible chapping of skin due to defatting

15    by the alcoholic gel.

In an embodii'nentof the present invention, wherein the said wetting agent is glycerine.

In an embodiment of the present invention, wherein the said disinfectios medicament is selected from a group of quaternary ammonium compounds.

20    In an embodiment of the present invention, wherein the said quaternary ammonium compounds is alkyl-dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium chloride

In an embodiment of the present invention, wherein the said disinfectious medicament is 1 to 2°/o by weight.

25    In an embodiment of the present invention, wherein the said alcohol is ethanol and isopropyl alcohol or a mixture of the two.

In an embodiment of the present invention wherein the said alcohol is contained as 40 to 70°/o by weight.

35    selected from a group of the water soluble high molecular cellulose used as a thickening agent includes, for example, methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, and the like.

45    method of preparing a disinfectious medicament comprises of:

hydroxyethyl cellulose (1-3°/ow/v) is added slowly to purified water (25°/ov/v ) and the mixture is stirred until gelation occurs. To enhance gelation caustic soda (10ml) is added and the mixture is well stirred until it becomes homogeneous. To the

50    resulting gel is added 80°/o of the total 70°/o of the required alcohol in the formulation and the mixture is stirred until it becomes homogeneous. To the resulting alcoholic gel is added an alkyl-dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium chloride (1-2°/ov/v). To the resulting formulation is added the remaining 20°/o of the total

55    volume of alcohol to be used and the mixture is stirred until it becomes homogenous, by which there is prepared a colorless and clear fast drying disinfectant composition for the hands and fingers.


These components of thickening agent are incorporated in such an amount that the disinfectant composition can show a viscosity

60    suitable for spreading onto the skin without falling off when applied, and for such a purpose.

The alcohol is selected from low carbon compounds comprising of ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, or a mixture thereof.

The thickening agent used for the disinfectant composition of the

65    present invention consists essentially of a combination of one or more of the water-soluble, high molecular cellulose compound and caustic soda, and when any one of these components is used alone, the desired composition can not be obtained.

Likewise, when the water-soluble, high molecular cellulose

70    compound is incorporated in an amount of less than 0.1 °/o by weight, the prepared disinfectant composition does not have sufficient viscosity suitable for use, but on the other hand, when the amount is over 2.5°/o by weight, the composition has too high viscosity and hence is hardly handled.

CLAIMS

1.    A substance for disinfection, comprising:

a thickening medium;

a solution of a disinfectious medicament added to the thickening medium;

a wetting agent mixed to the above formulation; and;

the entire formulation contained in an alcohol.

2    The substance according to claim 1, wherein the said thickening medium is a combination of a gelation enhancer and a water soluble high molecular cellulose selected from a group comprising methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, and the like.

3    The substance according to claim 2, wherein the said gelation enhancer is sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide.

4    The substance according to claim 2, wherein the said water soluble high molecular cellulose is hydroxyethyl cellulose.

5    The substance according to claim 1, wherein the said disinfectious medicament is selected from a group of the quaternary ammonium compounds.

6    The substance according to claim 5, wherein the said quaternary ammonium compounds is alkyl-dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium chloride.


7    The substance according to claim 1, wherein the said wetting agent is selected from glycerin, propylene glycol, sorbitol, 1,3-butylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, hyaluronic acid, urea, sodium pyrrolidonecarboxylate, and the like, which are used alone or in combination of two or more thereof.

8    The substance according to claim 7, wherein the said wetting agent is selected glycerine.
 
9    The substance according to claim 1, wherein the said alcohol is selected from ethanol and isopropyl or a mixture of the two.

10    A method for preparing a disinfectious medicament substance, comprising:

adding slowly a thickening agent into a purified water while stirring;

adding a gelation enhancer to the thickening medium;

adding a first portion of the total required alcohol to the now formed gel;

adding a disinfectant medicament to the alcoholic based gel;


adding a wetting agent to the above gel;

adding the final portion of the remaining alcohol to the gel;

applying an effective amount of the formulation for disinfection purposes.

11    The method according to claim 10, wherein each of the above substance is stirred to produce homogenous compound upon addition.

12    The method according to claim 10, wherein the said thickening medium is selected from a group comprising methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, and the like.


13    The method according to claim 12, wherein the said thickening medium is hydroxyethyl cellulose.

14    The method according to claim 10, wherein the said disinfectious medicament is selected from a group of the quaternary ammonium chlorides.

15    The method according to claim 14, wherein the said quartenary ammonium compounds is alkyl-dimethyl- benzyl-ammonium chloride.

16    The method according to claim 10, wherein the said wetting agent is selected from glycerin, propylene glycol, sorbitol, 1,3-butylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, hyaluronic acid, urea, sodium pyrrolidonecarboxylate, and the like, which are used alone or in combination of two or more thereof.

17    The method according to claim 16, wherein the said wetting agent is selected glycerine.

18    The method according to claim 10, wherein the said alcohol is selected from ethanol and isopropyl or a mixture of the two.

19    A substance of a disinfectious medicament contained in an alcohol, comprising: the disinfectious medicament selected from the group consisting of quaternary ammonium compounds; a wetting agent contained in the disinfectious medicament; and; a thickening agent.


20    The substance according to claim 19, which comprises using as the only thickening agent a thickening agent consisting of a combination of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide and hydroxyethyl cellulose.


21    The method according to claim 20, wherein the sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide is contained in an amount of not more than 10ml, and the hydroxyethyl cellulose is contained in an amount of 0.1 to 2.5°/o by weight of the composition.


22    A method for controlling the viscosity of a disinfectious medicament composition comprising:

adding slowly and stirring a thickening agent into a purified water;


adding a gelation enhancer to the thickening medium;

adding a first portion of the total required alcohol to the gel;


adding a disinfectant medicament to the alcoholic based gel;
 
adding a wetting agent to the above gel;

adding the final portion of the remaining alcohol;

applying an effective amount of the formulation for disinfection purposes.

the addition of the above compounds being stirred to produce homogenous compound; and;

23    The method according to claim 22, wherein each of the above substance is stirred to produce homogenous compound upon addition.

24    The method according to claim 22 and 23, wherein the steps as described must be followed in order to achieve a disinfectious medicament with the desired characteristics.

25    The substance and method for disinfection according to claims claims 1, 10, 19, and 22, wherein the said alcohol is a member selected from the group consisting of ethanol, and isopropyl alcohol, and a mixture of two or more thereof.

26    A method for disinfection of the skin, which comprises applying a composition comprising a solution of a disinfectious medicament in an alcohol and as the only thickening agent a thickening agent consisting of a combination of a sodium hydroxide and hydroxyethyl cellulose. The disinfectant being applied as a gel and the composition capable of drying rapidly without falling off the skin, and without the necessity for washing or wiping with a towel, and wherein after application the treated hands and fingers do not have unpleasant stickiness or contain scale-like residue.
